A woman has fallen to her death from a huge Manhattan office building in an apparent suicide.
The 53-year-old, named locally as Caroline Kenny, was found dead in the early hours of Tuesday morning, police said.
Her body was discovered by a security guard outside 80 Maiden Lane, a 25-storey tower in the financial district, police confirmed.
Tragic scene: A 54-year-old woman was found dead outside 80 Maiden Lane in Manhattan having plunged to her death
Officers had said it was not yet clear whether the woman had jumped from the building or fallen but told the New York Daily News her death appeared ‘non-criminal in nature’.
However, sources quoted by the New York Post claim Ms Kenny was unhappy about her personal life and left a suicide note saying 'I just can't take it anymore'.
The unmarried nurse, who lived in Brooklyn, worked for the Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty, an advocacy group founded in 1972 to aid underprivileged locals.
A co-worker at the council said that after turning 50, Ms Kenny had been 'kind of going through this, "Where am I going? What am I doing?'"'
The advocacy body's CEO William Rapfogel said Ms Kenny worked for the council for over 20 years training nurses 'and was terrific at it'.
Her body was left covered in a blanket on the pavement outside 80 Maiden Line for more than five hours as police investigated the scene while commuters made their way to work.
80 Maiden Lane made the news in March last year when a construction crane collapsed and crashed against the building's 23rd floor.
A crane operator had his license suspended over the incident which saw pieces of the tower block fall to the pavement below, though no pedestrians were injured.
